Summary
This observational, descriptive and transversal study triangulated qualitative and quantitative data available from national surveys and previous studies on this topic in the Dominican Republic, with primary data collected from key stakeholders and through medical record revision in country’s major maternity hospitals.
Study findings suggest that the tendencies and dynamics of adolescent pregnancy in the Dominican Republic seem to be shifting, suggesting specific socio-cultural determinants to be addressed in order to reduce the negative impact early pregnancies might have on the quality of life of young women and their families, while strengthening the resilience and copying strategies of those who opt for early motherhood.
