Summary
Innovative community-based participatory research training initiative (IPBC) through a Training Program, delivered on a locally created virtual learning platform, and a Mentoring Program, in which health sciences students (medicine, nursing, bioanalysis, dentistry, pharmacy, psychology and veterinary) from different universities in the country and community leaders from the Batey Cinco Casas (BCC) developed projects with this research approach, in a collaborative manner.
BACKUP builds on a pre-existing collaborative platform between the Dominican health research center, Two Oceans in Health, Florida International University (FIU) College of Public Health and Social Work, the Center for Research on HIV/ AIDS and Drug Abuse in Latinos in the United States (CRUSADA) and the School of Medicine of O&M (O&Med), with funding from the Embassy of the United States in the Dominican Republic.
This project aimed to create local capacities in IPBC to improve Human Security in vulnerable populations, raising awareness about the health disparities faced by the Bateyes, promoting leadership and mobilization of community members and laying the foundations for future academy-community collaborations.
